Hi everyone,

I wanted to let you know that the Joe Pass webinar was originally scheduled for January 13, but due to illness I had to reschedule it to the 20 january . my apologies! maybe you can join for the new date :)

Joe Pass – Part 3

📅 Tuesday, 20 January

⏰ 7:00 – 9:00 PM (CET)

📍 Live on Zoom

In this webinar, we’ll continue working on the Joe Pass Guitar Style book, focusing on pages 5–7. I’ve been working on these pages for quite a while, and I’m still learning so much myself. Some of this material is challenging, and I’m definitely struggling with it at times — but that’s exactly what makes it so inspiring. Every time I practice it, I get new ideas, especially for comping, but also for re-harmonizing melodies in ways I hadn’t thought of before.

1 ) We’ll explore Joe Pass’s approach to chord melody and how he uses augmented and diminished chords to smoothly connect chords to each other. From there, we’ll dive into a really cool

2)blues etude. What fascinates me about this etude is that Joe Pass basically uses just two chord shapes to play an entire blues, yet creates so much variation through the way he picks the chords and uses rhythm. With a very minimal harmonic setup, you can make it sound surprisingly modern. It’s also a demanding etude for both left and right hand. I’ve been practicing it a lot myself, and even after spending quite some time with it, I keep discovering new details. It’s not the easiest way to play a blues — but it sounds so good, maybe even better because of that.

3) We’ll also look at the back-cycling method, which has given me a lot of ideas for reharmonizing melodies. I’m still experimenting with it myself and finding new sounds all the time — it’s really inspiring 🎸

I’d love to see you there.

All the best,

What is the Joe Pass Editions ?

This is a monthly live study group where we work through the Joe Pass Guitar Style book page by page, line by line, and always in real musical context.

Each month includes:

  • One live Zoom session (2 hours)

  • We study the Joe Pass Guitar Style book systematically, not randomly

  • Clear harmonic context, fingerings, voice-leading, and an explanation of why things work

  • Practical practice strategies so the material actually sticks

  • Full replay access if you can’t attend live

  • A structured approach you can revisit at your own pace

This is not a masterclass and not a one-off workshop.
It’s a long-term, guided journey through Joe Pass’s musical language.

How the sessions work

  • We take one section at a time from the book

  • Nothing is skipped, rushed, or assumed

  • You see:

    • How Joe Pass thinks harmonically

    • How chords, lines, and movement connect

    • How to practice the material musically, not mechanically

  • You can ask questions live

  • You can also rely on the replay ( now in FullHD ) if life gets in the way

You don’t need to “be ready” before joining —
being in the room is already the start.

Most guitarists already own the Joe Pass book.

Very few actually understand it.

Common problems:

  • You learn a page… then don’t know how to use it

  • Shapes feel isolated

  • The harmony feels dense or confusing

  • You lose motivation working alone

  • You jump ahead and miss foundations

This Live Edition solves that by giving you:

  1. Structure

You don’t guess what to practice.
You know exactly what we’re working on each month.

2. Context

Nothing exists in isolation.
Every chord, line, and idea is placed into real musical situations.

3. Accountability

One focused live meeting per month keeps you moving forward —
even when motivation dips.

4. Energy

There is something powerful about learning live together.
It’s harder to postpone, easier to stay engaged, and more inspiring.

5. Depth over speed

We go slow enough for real understanding, not surface-level “lick collecting.” And the safety of knowing: I can always watch the replay later

Who this is for

This is for you if:

  • You love Joe Pass’s sound

  • You want to understand jazz guitar from the inside

  • You enjoy structured, deep learning

  • You want progress without pressure

  • You value clarity over shortcuts

Who this is NOT for

This is not for you if:

  • You want quick licks with no theory

  • You don’t enjoy working with written material

  • You’re looking for entertainment instead of study

If you're joining now and have missed previous sessions:

No worries! You can still jump in at any point.

Here's how:

  • Replays of all past sessions (including parts 1 and 2) are available, so you can catch up on anything you've missed at your own pace.

  • Join live from this point forward and continue learning with the group. Each session is designed to stand on its own while also building on the previous ones, so you’ll always gain something valuable.

  • You’ll get access to all past materials (book pages, practice exercises, discussion points), and you can revisit any session as needed.

Even if you missed the earlier sessions, you can still make great progress and learn the material thoroughly with the resources available.
